Statins lead in top 10 subsidised drugs

Statins have topped the list of the most commonly prescribed PBS medicines for the year July 2013 – June 2014.

The list, published in Australian Prescriber, provides a break-down of the top ten drugs according to defined daily dose (DDD) per 1000 people per day; by prescription counts; and by cost to government.

Rosuvastatin replaced atorvastatin at the top of the list for the most costly prescribed medicine, costing the government over $284 million for over 7.6 million prescriptions. The
