Stuck, but GPs find a way home

Many delegates were stuck in the Red Centre, but others – like Tamworth GP Dr Jenny May – proved you can’t keep rural GPs away from their practices for long.

Having lost her Sunday flight, during the following two days Dr May flew from Alice Springs to Uluru, Uluru to Cairns, Cairns to Hamilton Island, Hamilton Island to Sydney and, finally, from Sydney home to Tamworth.

RDAA president Dr Paul Mara had his own light plane flown to Alice Springs so he and his wife Dr Virginia Rice could fly themselves home to Gundagai, while RDASA vice president Dr Peter Rischbieth caught The Ghan overnight to Adelaide. Lakes Entrance GP Dr David Campbell hired a car for the 2563 km drive back to Victoria.

Outgoing ACRRM president Dr Jeff Ayton said the determination of delegates to get back to work highlighted the resourcefulness of rural GPs.
