Study backs probiotics for children

A commercially available probiotic yoghurt is effective in preventing antibiotic-related diarrhoea in children, according to an Australian study.

In a double-blind trial, 70 children taking broad-spectrum antibiotics for ear or throat infections were randomised to receive 200g/day of either Vaalia probiotic yoghurt or placebo of pasteurised yoghurt.

Six of the 36 children in the placebo group developed severe diarrhoea and none of the 34 children in probiotic yoghurt group developed the condition, report the University of Tasmania
