Study determines the key to successful ageing

It’s about doing more exercise than recommended

The benefits of exercise in older age are well known, but now researchers say the key to reducing the risk of chronic disease is to exercise more than currently recommended levels.

In a 10-year study of more than 1500 Australians over 50, the researchers found that people who engaged in the highest levels of total physical activity were twice as likely as non-exercisers to avoid stroke, heart disease, angina, cancer and diabetes.

Those who did more than 5000 metabolic equivalent minutes (MET minutes) each week saw the greatest risk
