Study highlights drug-shortages in pharmacies

Prescription drug shortages are becoming a daily occurrence as a result of the PBS price-lowering policy, a study shows.

Although manufacturing problems are usually cited as reasons for prescription medications being in short supply, the government’s policy on price reductions means that wholesalers and pharmacies are increasingly reluctant to hold stocks of products that may be affected by quarterly price reductions, a survey of 20 retail pharmacists has revealed.

Wholesalers and pharmacies are holding off buying stocks of drugs from manufacturers because they fear losing
