Study quantifies GDM pregnancy risks

Women with gestational diabetes and their babies have a greater risk of a range of pregnancy-related complications, a large Melbourne study has found.

GDM is an independent risk factor for pre-eclampsia, induction of labour and caesarian section, data from nearly 40,000 women of diverse ethnic backgrounds shows.

Newborns of women with GDM are more likely to be large for gestational age, be hypoglycaemic, develop hyperbilirubinaemia and need special care nursery admission, compared with those whose mothers do not have GDM,
