Study shows adolescent food allergy more common than thought

Food allergy is more common than previously thought, according to a group of experts who say prevalence among Australian adolescents is “concerningly high”.

About one in 20 kids aged 10-14 has a food allergy, their study shows.

This number represents the commonness of the condition, rather than better reporting, say the researchers, who employed the gold standard oral food challenge to reach their findings.

Peanut and tree nut are the most common allergies with each affecting 2-3% of adolescents.
