Suicide rates fall in young men

Suicide rates for young men are falling in Australia, research shows, although experts say the figures mask worrying increases in rural areas and Indigenous communities.

The research, published Friday in the Lancet (online), found the global suicide rate has increased 45% over the last 45 years, but this trend was bucked when considering young men in Australia.

Countrywide, 12.2 male adolescents and 3.5 female adolescents per 100,000 commit suicide, according to the latest statistics.
