Surgeons call for more expensive wine

ALCOHOL taxes are endangering public health by encouraging vineyards to pump out low-cost wines, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons says.

In a letter responding to a federal government discussion paper on wine taxation, the college calls for an overhaul in which all alcohol would be taxed according to its alcohol content.

Under the present so-called Wine Equalisation Tax (WET), fruit-based alcohol is taxed
