Suspected meningococcal death in Qld

The disease is the suspected cause of death of a patient who was being treated at a hospital in Warwick, southwest of Brisbane, at the weekend.

The person's details haven't been released but media reports say the patient was a 17-year-old girl. 

Darling Downs Public Health Unit director Penny Hutchinson said: "All of the people who have been in close contact with the most recent suspected case have been followed up with the appropriate treatment." 

"Obviously this is a very distressing time for the family, and our heartfelt sympathy goes to them."

There were 64 confirmed cases of the disease across the state in 2012, 33 last year and 21 so far this year. It was reported on Monday that a woman had died of the disease in the Hunter New England region – the sixth case of meningococcal disease in the region this year
