Sydney drug theft could make $43m of illegal amphetamines

MEN with sledgehammers smashed through concrete walls and seized barrels of pharmaceutical drugs that could be used to make about $43 million of illegal amphetamines, police say.

Three men broke into an industrial unit in Kingsgrove, in Sydney's southwest, and stole 67 kg of codeine and 50 kg of pseudoephedrine between 1am (AEDT) and 3am (AEDT) on Sunday.

"Once inside, they managed to manipulate or tamper with the alarm and have used sledgehammers to break through an internal room to gain access to where these drugs are kept," Acting Inspector Michael Stuart told reporters outside Campsie Police Station on Monday.
