Sydney GP to continue practising despite ignoring prescription ban

Dr Renato Di Mascio from Sydney’s west was instead formally reprimanded, given a long list of conditions and once again banned from prescribing Schedule 8 and Schedule 4D drugs, the NSW Medical Tribunal said.

In its finding, the tribunal said Dr Di Mascio was first banned from prescribing drugs of addiction in 2001 after an investigation found he had prescribed them to people he ought to have known were drug-dependent.

Dr Di Mascio let his registration lapse in 2003 but successfully re-registered in 2008 on the condition that he not prescribe controlled substances until approved by the NSW Medical Board.

But another investigation in 2010 found he had again prescribed Schedule 8 and Schedule 4D substances, albeit not inappropriately. The tribunal said Dr Di Mascio admitted breaching his conditions.
