Take-home naloxone is a life saver, study shows

A take-home naloxone program in NSW has been declared a success after half of those given the opioid antagonist used it to reverse an overdose.

A review of 35 people given a take-home overdose management pack by Sydney drug and alcohol services found that half of them used the naloxone to reverse an overdose and a total of 30 overdoses were successfuly reversed.

Most of the naloxone kits were used to reverse an overdose for another person for whom the agent had not been prescribed, which showed the potential for wider harm reduction, said the report authors
