Tamiflu ineffective in nursing home flu outbreaks

Antiviral prophylaxis with oseltamivir has no effect on influenza outbreaks in aged care facilities, a trial in NSW has found.

The use of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) prophylaxis in aged care facilities had no effect on outbreak attack rates, duration, hospitalisations or case fatality rate, a study conducted during the 2014 flu season found.

Carried out by public health units in NSW, the study compared the impact of offering 10 days of oseltamivir prophylaxis in 12 nursing home outbreaks with a control group of 29 flu outbreaks in nursing homes where oseltamivir was only offered as treatment for symptomatic
