Tamoxifen the 'new statins' for breast cancer

GPs are being urged to take on a greater role in prescribing tamoxifen to women at high risk of breast cancer rather than leaving preventive treatment to cancer specialists.

Associate Professor Kelly Phillips, medical oncologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, says there’s no reason why GPs should not initiate tamoxifen as preventive treatment in the same way they prescribe statins to manage cardiovascular risk.
