Telemonitoring trial points to GP future

The $8 million trial, announced today by Veterans’ Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon and Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy, will involve about 300 veterans living in areas of NSW, WA, Queensland and Tasmania connected to the National Broadband Network.

Senator Conroy said the trial would assess the benefits of telemonitoring services and aim to develop a model that could be more widely adopted.

Participating veterans will have an individual healthcare plan developed by their GP and a nurse coordinator, and vital statistics will be monitored from home as part of the program, which will also include access to high definition video consultations with their GP or nurse coordinator when necessary.

AMA president Dr Steve Hambleton said the trial was an extension of where general practice care is already going.

“I think it is visionary,” he told MO.
