Tell-tale signs of hand sanitiser toxicity

Health professionals are being warned to be aware of hand sanitiser toxicity after an increase in incidents involving young children in the US.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports there were over 70,000 cases of ingestion from 2011 to 2014 among children 12 and under. There were no deaths.

Most related to alcohol-based products and were in children under six. However, there is also evidence that older children are at risk.

Here are the six most common symptoms of hand sanitiser toxicity in order:

  1. Ocular irritation
  2. Vomiting
  3. Conjunctivitis
