Threefold difference in GP amoxycillin scripts, reveals report

Wide and unwarranted variations in rates of medical and surgical interventions have been revealed in the first ever Australian Atlas of Healthcare Variation.

The report published this week by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care concluded that many of the differences in clinical practice, such as antibiotic prescribing, could not be justified.

"Unwarranted variation may mean that some people are receiving inappropriate or unnecessary care, while others may be missing out on care that might be beneficial," said Professor
