Tobacco tax hike will save lives, say health groups

Health groups have welcomed the Federal Government’s budget tobacco tax hikes, saying the move to push the price of a pack of cigarettes up to $40 will encourage hundreds of thousands of smokers to quit.

Treasurer Scott Morrison announced that the government would continue with Labor’s annual 12.5% increases in tobacco excise over the next four years in a $4.7 billion revenue-raising exercise that will increase the price of a pack of cigarettes from the current level of $25-$30 to $40 by 2020.
