Topical antibiotics behind rise in MRSA

Overuse of topical antibiotics is driving a dramatic increase in antibiotic resistance among community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus infections, microbiologists in New Zealand warn.

In what they describe as a “cautionary tale”, researchers from the University of Auckland said Australia should learn from the experience of New Zealand, which now had the developed world’s highest rates of MRSA to topical antibacterial agents.
