Trainee surgeons dangerously tired

Trainee surgeons spend more than a quarter of their waking hours so tired they are "critically impaired”, posing a danger to patients and themselves, a study finds.

Tracking the sleep patterns of 27 US orthopaedic surgical residents, researchers found they functioned at less than 70% mental effectiveness — deemed critically impaired - for more than a quarter (27%) of their waking hours.
