Tuberculosis risk for bong smokers

YOUNG Australians using bongs to smoke marijuana may be putting themselves at risk of tuberculosis, Newcastle researchers warn.

Three pulmonary tuberculosis cases have been identified in young, Australian-born, non-Indigenous adults where marijuana was "possibly a significant risk factor" in TB transmission and severity, a conference will be told on Monday.

"Health professionals need to remain aware of the possibility of tuberculosis in groups with historically low incidence rates," the researchers, from Calvary Mater hospital, said.
