Turf war as pharmacists move to “compete” with GPs

A Pharmacy Guild of Australia submission that calls for an expansion of the pharmacist’s role in chronic disease management shows the body wants pharmacists to compete with GPs, critics say. 

The guild’s submission to the Primary Health Care Advisory Group says pharmacists can “play a key role” as a first point of contact for patients with chronic conditions. 

It says pharmacies can function as a place of triage, advice and referral and that pharmacists can provide early intervention and risk assessment, on top of their roles as medicine
