Ultrasound fails to spot soft tissue cancers

Ultrasonography often fails to distinguish between malignant and benign soft tissue masses and more awareness is needed of the pitfalls, a study has found.

An analysis of 170 cases in New Zealand found that, of the 60 patients with malignant soft tissue masses, ultrasonography incorrectly diagnosed seven and did not suggest a diagnosis in 18.
