Unexplained chest pain carries big cardio risk

Most first episodes of chest pain go undiagnosed yet these primary care patients are at significantly increased cardiovascular risk for at least five years, warn researchers.

A review of more than 170,000 electronic health records in the UK shows these patients have fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events at much higher rates at later follow-up — nearly double at one year and more than 20% higher at five-and-a-half years.

The results suggest undiagnosed new chest pain justifies more aggressive assessment and prevention.
