Universities push to raise medical school fees

The head of Australia’s most powerful group of universities is pushing for medical schools to be allowed to raise their fees for undergraduate students by around 25%, despite warnings it could have disastrous workforce consequences.

Professor Fred Hilmer, chair of the Group of Eight coalition of leading Australian universities, last week said a growing number of universities now favoured raising fees for students in degrees for high earning professions, such as medicine, law, business and engineering.
