Vegetative patients show signs of consciousness

British scientists say they are closer to being able to detect some form of consciousness in otherwise unresponsive vegetative patients.

Their study uncovers hidden signatures of brain networks that could support cognitive function and consciousness despite the absence of any external signs of awareness.

Comparing the brain networks of 32 patients diagnosed as vegetative and minimally conscious with healthy controls, the researchers used electroencephalography to show that some have well-preserved brain networks that look similar
