Veiled threats: GP outraged over intimidating opioid letters

Missive from Chief Medical Officer says high-prescribers are being monitored

A former chief of Medicare’s fraud investigation unit says she is “incredulous” and “overwhelmed by anxiety” after receiving a letter from the Chief Medical Officer about her opioid prescribing.


Dr Janet Mould, who led the Medicare Program Review Division between 2001 and 2006, is one of 4800 GPs targeted by the Department of Health with letters informing them that they prescribe more opioids than at least 80% of their peers.
