Vertebroplasty vindicated for early fractures

New evidence from an Australian trial backs the use of vertebroplasty in selected patients with painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

A randomised trial in 120 patients showed that vertebroplasty was superior to placebo in reducing pain and disability during a six-month follow-up for patients with osteoporotic fractures of less than six weeks’ duration.

The study, carried out by Dr William Clark and colleagues at four participating centres in Sydney, also showed that vertebroplasty was most effective in patients with severe pain, as well as for fractures closer to the thoracolumbar
