Vic spells out pharmacists’ role in euthanasia

The Victorian government will introduce legislation to allow dying patients to take their own life using medications dispensed by a pharmacist.

It has accepted all of 66 recommendations in a report by former AMA President Dr Brian Owler, which includes a central role for pharmacists.

“The involvement of a pharmacist is an important safeguard because it provides additional independent input from another health practitioner,” the report states.

“As the dose of medication is intended to be lethal, there is no other purpose for which the prescribed dose could be used, so it will be clear to a pharmacist what the prescription is for.”
