Video comp winners are budding filmmakers

A RESOURCEFUL group of final-year medical students from the University of Western Sydney have been rewarded for their continued efforts to promote a career in general practice to their peers, taking out a recent AGPT and AMSA-run video competition.

The three students, who won the $4500 prize on offer, had just a single hectic day to put together a video for the competition, which aimed to increase awareness of general practice among medical students.

The trio – Sashie Howpage, Aarani Somaskanthan and Mercia Eminoglu – won the same competition last year with a stop-motion ‘claymation’ video along similar lines.

This time around, the group opted for another stop-motion technique, borrowing a camera and painting the animation onto a glass door at the home of Ms Howpage’s parents.

“We worked with what we had, using paints from a $2 shop and stealing my dad’s camera for the day,” she said.
