Vitamin D test rules have ‘wriggle room’

The new MBS item 66833, introduced last month, covers 25(OH)D testing for high-risk groups, including people with deeply pigmented skin, chronic and severe lack of sun exposure,  osteoporosis and malabsorption.

Testing restrictions followed a Medicare review finding an almost  4000% increase in the number of patients having vitamin D levels checked during the past decade.
