Warning over cardiac risk with macrolides

They may be the first choice of antibiotic for patients allergic to penicillin, but researchers are warning against overuse of macrolides after new findings highlighted their cardiac risks.

A major analysis of cardiac events in more than 100,000 patients taking clarithromycin has shown it to be associated with a significant short-term increase in heart attacks and cardiac deaths.

Clarithromycin was associated with two additional MIs per 1000 patients treated and one additional cardiac death compared with patients taking amoxycillin, according to an analysis of the case–control study
