Warning over HPV screening program delay

The revamped cervical cancer screening program could be delayed for six months because of a political stoush over Telstra running the new National Cancer Screening Register.

The introduction of HPV testing as the primary screening test was scheduled to roll out from May next year, but a delay in the register could force GPs to continue to use Pap smears until November 2017, a Senate inquiry has heard.

The inquiry was set up in the wake of political fighting over the Department of Health’s decision to award Telstra Health the contract to run the register, which will record patients’ cancer
