Warning over rise in enterovirus activity
Sydney GPs are being urged to remain vigilant for enteroviral meningoencephalitis, in light of high enterovirus activity in the city's north in recent months.
While most cases have been mild, presenting as hand, foot and mouth disease, there had been a "small minority" of cases resulting in neurological disease, according to an alert from the Northern Sydney Local Health District.
Symptoms to look out for include:
- urinary retention
- ataxia, weakness or any neurological signs
- myoclonic jerks
- irritability or altered
