Western diet linked to Alzheimer’s

The proliferation of amyloid plaques in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients could be due to eating a Western diet, say international scientists.

The researchers found that compounds in the body known as advanced glycation end-products (AGE) - the result of a western-style diet - disable an important enzyme that protects the brain.

Previously linked to diabetes and neurodegenerative disease, AGEs may be one possible cause of the accumulation of amyloid plaques.
