What predicts IBS?

German researchers have pinpointed key risk factors for developing irritable bowel syndrome.
Anxiety about illness, gastro infection, vulnerability to diarrhoea under stress, somatic symptom burden and being female all predicted later IBS in a group of 1500 long-distance travellers.
The researchers say the causes of IBS are clearly multifactorial, taking in both psychosocial and physiological factors.
