Assisted reproductive technologies are linked to an 80% increased risk of spontaneous preterm birth compared with natural conception, a meta-analysis found.


The study of more than 60,000 births suggests the use of in-vitro fertilisation and intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection significantly increases the risk of a baby being born before 37 weeks.

Placental development may play a key role in its pathogenesis, the authors said.
