When being religious is of little comfort
Believing in a god is tied to increased risk of suicidal thoughts and actions for people who identify as gay or lesbian, according to data from a US study of more than 21,000 college students aged 18-30.
The findings are in contrast to previous research that suggests being religious is somewhat protective against suicidal ideation.
In the study, all participants rated the importance of religion in their lives on a 1 to 5 scale, from “not important” to “very important.”
