Postmenopausal women should not be given HRT for the primary prevention of chronic medical conditions, according to recommendations from a respected US health agency.

The US Preventive Services Task Force has issued an update that recommends against the use of combined oestrogen and progestin in postmenopausal women (or oestrogen alone in postmenopausal women who have had a hysterectomy) to prevent chronic conditions such as heart disease, dementia and stroke.
