White-coat hypertension findings in doubt

All patients with white-coat hypertension would benefit from 30 minutes of automated office blood pressure monitoring, say Dutch researchers.

This simple technique enables their blood pressure readings to drop, which reduces the risk of overdiagnosis and overtreatment, they say.

Their study of more than 200 middle-aged primary care patients with suspected white-coat hypertension found “considerable differences” between patients who had routine clinical monitoring and those allocated extra time and readings.
