Women are now drinking as much as men and are experiencing the same if not greater levels of harm, a global analysis of four million people shows.
The 100-year study by the NHMRC suggests that alcohol use disorders can no longer be viewed as a male phenomenon.
The findings, pooled from 68 studies, confirm the closing male-female gap. The trend, which is known as sex convergence, is most evident among young adults.
In fact, women born after 1981 may actually be drinking more than their male peers, says lead researcher Associate Professor Tim Slade from UNSW.
