Yoga boosts balance in older people

Yoga may help reduce the risk of falls in older people, Australian research suggests.

A Sydney study has found a 12-week Iyengar yoga course significantly improved balance and mobility in a group of men and women aged between 59 and 87.

At the end of the program, the yoga participants were able to complete the sit-to-stand test within an average of nine seconds compared with 14 seconds in the control group.

Studies have shown that people who take longer than 12 seconds have twice the risk of multiple falls in the following year than those who can manage the task in less time.
