BTW, it will probably come as an enormous surprise but when looking at the issue of post-operative DVTs (non orthopaedic anyway) cigarette smoking actually protects the patient against its development after surgery - it's almost as good as subcutaneous heparin. This has been described numerous times since the mid 1970's. One of the few beneficial side-effects of smoking but not a reason to start.
