If you could cure one disease, which would it be?

Depression, as it is so common and so debilitating and associated with awful suffering for patients and families.

What philosophical principle informs the work you do?

Autonomy: people have to be empowered to help themselves as much as possible, with appropriate support and guidance and encouragement and skill-building.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to a medical student?

Choose a career in psychiatry, as the mind is the final frontier and we will never know everything about it so it will be endlessly interesting.

The best book you ever read?

The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. I love the play on the passage of time, the irony of seven years’ ‘cure’ in a sanatorium being a segue to (portended) death on the battlefield.
