AIHW to review research on GP-type presentations at EDs

An article published in the latest edition of the MJA suggested AIHW figures quantifying such presentations – based on the two lowest-priority triage categories – had contributed to a perception that EDs were being swamped by general practice patients.

The study of ED presentations at three tertiary hospitals in Perth found just 10–12% of cases could have been dealt with by a GP.

Using AIHW methodology, 25% of ED patients were more suitable for general practice
