AMA calls on govt to relax union rules

NSW is the only state that bans another union from setting up if workers are represented by an existing body, and AMA (NSW) has been calling on the state’s parliament to relax the rules so the 1600 junior doctors in the HSU can have a choice.

HSU is now facing possible deregistration as a union after extensive investigations into claims its directors misused union credit cards. The directors deny the claims.

Asked by a reporter last week if the HSU might transfer its long-suffering members to a more reputable union, acting president Chris Brown said: “That’s certainly something in the back of my mind.

“I don’t think we’re at that stage yet, but we could get there if these accusations continue and the union continues to be damaged.”
