Athletes on their marks for diabetes

Australian and international athletes have been speaking out about diabetes this week – hoping to improve detection of the disease and show it is no barrier to high performance.

Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman was at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday to launch a campaign for HbA1c testing to be subsidised for screening as well as monitoring of type 2 diabetes.

“It is Australia's fastest growing disease, one of our most chronic diseases and it's a disease which has to be taken very seriously,” she said.
