Call to relax anti-dementia drug restrictions

The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), Alzheimer’s Australia and individual clinicians have called for the change in response to the current PBAC review of donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine and memantine.

The review was initiated due to concern the medications were being prescribed for too long without improvement in rates of institutionalisation and death.

But Associate Professor Michael Woodward, medical director of aged and residential care at Austin Health, Melbourne, said the review was targeting the only treatment available to a vulnerable patient group.
