Call to scrap rebates for low-value insurance

A KEY healthcare lobby says the government should use its $6 billion private health insurance rebates to force private funds to give better value and dump subsidies for non-evidence-based treatments.

The call comes after Health Minister Sussan Ley told private health funds last Friday to scale back their requests for premium increases of some 6%, to take effect on 1 April.

Consumers Health Forum CEO Leanne Wells says the minister’s action was “welcome and justifiable” and highlights the need for more competition among funds.
